Position Summary

Reporting to the Fire Chief or their designate, the Casual Firefighter is responsible for emergency response services and general duties related to Fire Services equipment upkeep within Yellowhead County.

The Casual Firefighter provides essential support to the full-time day crew by covering scheduled shifts to ensure consistent operational readiness. This role includes responding to emergencies, participating in training, and supporting fire suppression, rescue, and hazardous materials response efforts and other duties as directed. Casual Firefighters may be drawn from internal candidates within the Yellowhead County Fire Department or external candidates from other fire departments where they are in good standing in these departments.

Position Responsibilities

Emergency Response

  • Respond to fire, rescue, and hazardous materials incidents as directed;
  • Operate firefighting equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner;
  • Support emergency operations under the supervision of the Incident Commander;
  • Perform rescue operations, including vehicle extrication and technical rescues, as required;
  • Maintain proficiency in fire suppression techniques, hazardous materials response, rescue operations, and apparatus awareness;
  • Attend and actively participate in scheduled training sessions to maintain operational readiness;
  • Stay current with fire department policies, procedures, and safety protocols;

Team and Station Support

  • Collaborate effectively with other team members during training and emergency responses;
  • Contribute to station duties such as equipment checks, maintenance, and cleaning; and
    Demonstrate commitment to the fire department’s mission and values.

Working Environment

  • Casual Firefighters must be available to provide shift coverage, often on short notice;
  • Work may involve exposure to extreme conditions, including fire, smoke, hazardous materials, and inclement weather;
  • The role requires physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, and operating heavy equipment; and
  • Regular attendance at training sessions and meetings is mandatory to maintain operational readiness.

Requirements

Qualification, Knowledge, Skill & Ability Requirements

Pre-Qualifications

Internal Candidate:

  • Minimum of three (3) months of service with the Yellowhead County Fire Department;
  • Successful completion of minimum training requirements and removal from probationary status;
  • Maintain attendance at a minimum of 40% of station training and 30% of station callouts; and
    Approval for the Casual Firefighter role by headquarters.

External Candidate:

  • Current member in good standing with another fire department;
  • Proof of training and ongoing participation in fire department activities; and
  • Approval for the Casual Firefighter role by headquarters.

Education/Experience

  • Completion of training in NFPA 1001 Level 1 or equivalent, Hazardous Materials Response, Apparatus Awareness and Rescue Operations is required;
  • Completion of training in NFPA 1001 Level 2 or equivalent, NFPA 472 Operations or equivalent and NFPA 1002 Pump Operations or equivalent is considered an asset and preferred;
  • Minimum two (2) years of emergency services experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills;
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record; and
    Ability to commit to scheduled shift coverage as needed.

Salary & Benefits

Casual Firefighter Hourly Wage: $27.67-$32.80
Position will remain open until filled.
