DIRECTOR, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 

The Director of Information Technology role reports to the Senior Director Information Technology and together they will be responsible for developing and implementing Information Technology (IT) strategies that enable the Association for Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis), to deliver against defined short-term and long-term business objectives. The Director also assists the Senior Director in ensuring the continuity and efficiency of IT Operations. The Director is responsible for guiding activities, projects, and initiatives with the appropriate level of support and project management rigor. 

 

Know-How

Practical/ Technical Knowledge 

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in Computing Sciences or another relevant discipline. Equivalent work experience or certifications in related disciplines will also be considered.
  • 7 – 10 years of progressive experience in Information Technology with emphasis in project management and delivery.
  • Experience with managing service providers and third-party contracts.
  • Any certifications in the following would be an asset:
    • PMP or equivalent.
    • ITIL or equivalent.
    • CISSP or equivalent.
    • MCSA/MCSE or equivalent.
    • AZ-305 or equivalent.
    • PL-200 or equivalent.
    • MB-230, MB-220, MB-210 or equivalent.
    • SC-400 or equivalent.

  • Must be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines, manage multiple high-priority activities in a fast-paced and changing environment and perform as a leader/mentor.

  • Ability to effectively and clearly present information and respond to questions from managers, employees, or other stakeholder groups to ensure optimal customer service.
  • Utilize judgment in resolving issues or in making recommendations.
  • Ability to research and recommend process improvements and technical solutions.
  • Work in an environment that coordinates with support providers.

 

Responsibilities

  • IT Strategy
    • Participate in ABmunis IT strategic planning activities to identify and document emerging needs and requirements supporting the Senior Director. 
    • Participate in the development and execution of the IT operational plan.
  • IT Security
    • Participate in the development, maintenance, and operationalization of IT Governance (Policies, Standards, Procedures) supporting the Senior Director.
    • Participate in the overall IT Security and Data Protection activities.
  • IT Operations
    • Work with the Senior Director to prioritize, plan and schedule activities.
    • Create project charters.
    • Develop, document, and maintain project structure and approach with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. 
    • Assist the Senior Director in resourcing projects according to the approved schedule.  
    • Support the new IT requests as it relates to assessment of scope, operational planning, and the initiation of activities and projects.
    • Support the solution selection criteria to ensure best practice decision-making is leveraged when selecting and implementing infrastructure, applications, middleware, monitoring, and tools.
    • Support existing technical strategies adopted within ABmunis.
    • Participate in the identification, development, and delivery of ABmunis training opportunities.
    • Participate operationally within the IT Team becoming a resource when required.
    • Maintain a solid knowledge of the overall department function.
  • Team Management
    • Provide leadership, direction, guidance, and coaching to individual team members.
    • Manage multiple concurrent projects and activities. 
    • Ensure effective and appropriate communications exist.   
  • Reporting
    • Interact and communicate planning and progress to the Senior Director through meetings, reports, and presentations.
    • Participate in the preparation and development of key metrics.

Support the Senior Director as required and maintain operational IT functions/continuity in their absence
