Job Description

The Town of Carstairs is seeking a Level 1 Community Peace Officer for a full-time position within the Town of Carstairs Protective Services Department. A competitive salary, based on requisite experience, as well as a benefit package will be offered to the successful applicant. Under general supervision, the Community Peace Officer ensures compliance with all municipal bylaws, provincial acts, and legislation. Community Peace Officers carry out an extensive range of investigation and enforcement requirements and functions. The incumbent will answer enquiries, initiate investigations, and finalize complaints. 

Certifications & Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent 
  • Community Peace Officer I (CPO 1) appointment through the Alberta Solicitor General
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certificate  
  • Valid Class Five (5) Alberta Driver's License

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities: 

  • Provide public education and awareness, and promote safety within the community
  • Answer citizen inquires and complaints with respect to provincial statutes and municipal bylaws
  • Conduct vehicle, bike and foot patrols of the Town of Carstairs
  • Participate in Community events, provide presentations, and maintain positive relationships with residents
  • Liaise with the RCMP, Town departments, and other external agencies as required
  • Enforce municipal bylaws, provincial statutes, and legislation by responding to complaints, initiating investigations, and finalizing complaints.
  • Enter, query, and maintain data in the information management system.
  • Issue violation tickets, lay charges, assist with prosecutions, appear and testify in a court of law. 
  • Apprehend animals, transport animals and provide safe rescue and release of animals. 
  • Carry out safe work practices and adhere to safety and other work-related regulations.  

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of, or ability to acquire knowledge of, relevant municipal bylaws, provincial acts, and legislation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clarify and convey information in a clear and concise manner. 
  • Diploma or certificate from a recognized Law Enforcement Program and/or several years of related experience in Law Enforcement. A Municipal Government environment would be an asset.
  • Will possess, or have the ability to obtain, an appointment as a Community Peace Officer through Alberta Justice and successfully complete the P.A.R.E. physical testing within the prescribed time and be valid at the time of appointment.
  • Above average skills in time management, interpersonal, and leadership.

Other Requirements

  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions. 
  • Ability to work a rotating shift that includes holidays, evening/night shift, and weekends.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain an RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance is required.
