Director of Finance

The Municipal District of Opportunity is in scenic northern Alberta.  There are five communities within the boundaries, home to approximately 6,000 people.  Wabasca, the largest of these, located on beautiful North and South Wabasca Lakes, is the location of the Head Office of the ‘Land of Opportunity’.  Oil and gas as well as forestry are the base of the economy in the Municipal District. Wabasca is located at the junction of Highways 813 and 754, approximately an hour north and east of the Town of Slave Lake. It is a thriving young community offering a variety of educational choices including three schools and Northern Lakes College. We offer a busy arena, community hall, recreation center, ball diamonds, skateboard park, 18-hole golf course ensure the opportunity for activities for the entire family.  Wabasca Water World and Fitness Center boasting a five-lane, 25 meter pool, waterslide, 16-person hot tub and state of the art fitness equipment are also a welcomed addition to the community. 

The Municipal District of Opportunity is seeking a self-motivated forward thinking professional to join our Finance team. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Finance position provides leadership and guidance to the Financial Services division.

Key Responsibilities

As a member of the municipalities Management Team, will be highly organized, self-motivated and have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. The ideal candidate will also possess a degree in Finance, business or other relevant discipline form a recognized educational institution and hold the CPA designation, complemented by substantial experience (10+ years) in financial management with considerable experience at a management level in a local government setting.

Education and Experience

• Degree in a related field, for example, Finance, Business Administration (a combination of education and experience may be considered)

• CPA Designation is desirable.
• CLGM (Certified Local Government Manager) or similar designation preferred;
• A minimum of ten years’ of public administration experience including five years’ experience in a senior leadership role, preferably in a field related to Financial Services department
• Must be bondable.
• Knowledge of computers and a windows environment and knowledge of Great Plains accounting software
• Satisfactory criminal record check upon hire.
