POSITION SUMMARY:      

Reporting to the Water & Wastewater Coordinator, the Water & Wastewater Operator is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the County Water Facilities and Distribution Systems, as well as the County’s wastewater lagoons. A strong mechanical aptitude is required.  The Water & Wastewater Operator must be comfortable working with technology, including Microsoft operating systems, Microsoft Office applications, plant SCADA software, and GPS / GIS systems. The Water & Wastewater Operator must ensure that all applicable municipal policies and bylaws, provincial legislation and federal legislation are adhered to. 

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:           

  • Assist with the day-to-day operations and general maintenance in the County’s Class III Water Treatment Plant (WT) and Class II Distribution Systems.

  • Assist with the day-to-day operations and general maintenance in the Class I Wastewater Treatment Lagoons and Class II Collection Systems. 

  • Assist with preparing and filing all reports required by the Water & Wastewater Coordinator.

  • Provide expertise, support and information to the Water & Wastewater Coordinator.

  • Adhere to all County Health and Safety policies. 

  • Ability to schedule and prioritize assigned tasks and complete same in a safe and timely manner and work with minimum supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: 

  • Alberta Environment Level II (or higher) Certification for Water Treatment and Distribution and be willing to write to Level III Certification for Water Treatment, Level II Wastewater Collection and Level I Wastewater Lagoons.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License with positive driving record.

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail required.

  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement, discretion, tact, and confidentiality always.

  • A positive record of working effectively with appointed and elected officials and the general public.

  • Familiar with Microsoft operating systems, Microsoft Office applications, plant SCADA software and County GPS and GIS systems.

  • Experience with Health and Safety committees and their policies.

  • Willingness to take training as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: 

  • Medium to heavy physical effort in relation to the season; occasional light-moderate lifting.

  • Extensive use of computers and related equipment. 

  • Use and operation of a vehicle.

  • Substantial traveling on Provincial and County paved highways and rural gravel roads, often in adverse weather conditions.

  • Occasional environmental exposure to weather conditions, rough terrain.

HEALTH & SAFETY:

  • All personnel working at Northern Sunrise County are governed by the County’s Health and Safety Policy and are eligible to be a member of the Health and Safety Committee.

  • Ensures all operations are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with County Policies and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

  • Ensure proper safety training and safe work practices for staff.

  • Ensure proper ergonomic requirements are met and good ergonomic procedures are practiced.
