$1B fund helps Alberta municipalities innovatively ‘go green’
The Green Municipal Fund (GMF) is investing in Alberta communities to implement bold projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase resiliency, and protect our environment.
Delivered by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), $1B is being invested in innovative community-based solutions that tackle climate challenges and can be replicated across the country.
In addition to funding 1,360 projects across Canada, the program has:
- Created more than 12,000 jobs nation-wide, generating more than $560 million for the economy
- Reclaimed 94 hectares of land
- Diverted 173,596 tons of waste
- Cut 2.7 million tonnes (projected) of greenhouse gas emissions (the equivalent of taking 608,000 cars off the road)
To date, the program has funded projects ranging from piloting innovative water treatment technologies to conducting studies that identify low-carbon and renewable energy projects.
The program awarded funding to the following Alberta communities:
- Town of Crossfield ($363,950)
- Brazeau County ($260,880)
- University of Calgary & City of Calgary ($175,000)
- City of Leduc ($135,690)
- City of Brooks ($82,000)
- Town of Canmore ($42,050)
- Town of High River ($35,150)
