ABmunis' 2024 Water Plan

We recognize that Alberta’s water supply is not limitless. In Alberta’s Water for Life strategy, the provincial government set the target for overall water conservation, efficiency, and productivity levels at a 30 per cent improvement. To achieve this, all major water-using sectors should develop water conservation, efficiency, and productivity (CEP) plans.

Over the past year, Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) engaged members on water conservation and updated our 2014 Water CEP. During the 2024 Summer Municipal Leaders Caucus sessions, we gathered feedback on previous targets such as residential per capita water usage, total water loss, and percentage of losses. This past December, ABmunis released the 2024 Water Conservation, Efficiency, and Productivity Plan, which provides a flexible strategy to support the long-term sustainability of Alberta’s water resources.

ABmunis’ Sustainability and Environment Committee remains committed to updating one of our five water policies each year, ensuring that Alberta’s water supply is managed sustainably. This year, the committee is dedicated to responding to the Government of Alberta’s Environment and Protected Areas Water Availability Engagements.
