Alberta leads nation in beverage container recycling
Alberta Municipalities is proud to champion recycling efforts across the province, and recent data confirms that Alberta is leading the way in Canada when it comes to beverage containers.
With an impressive 85% return rate for non-refillable beverage containers in 2024, Alberta placed first among provinces and territories – 11 percentage points higher than this year’s national average. Our province also placed second among North American jurisdictions, just behind the state of Oregon.
These achievements reflect the dedication of municipalities, industry partners and residents to work together to reduce waste and promote a circular economy.
Alberta Municipalities supports these efforts through its active participation on the Beverage Container Management Board (BCMB). Director Trina Jones represents our association’s interests on the BCMB, helping shape policies that enhance recycling systems across Alberta.
Our association is also a strong proponent of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which began on April 1, 2025. By holding producers accountable for the lifecycle of their products, EPR policies ensure that materials are managed more sustainably and efficiently.
These success stories reflect the commitment of Albertans to environmental stewardship and reinforce ABmunis' dedication to supporting municipalities in reducing waste and achieving long-term sustainability goals.
