AUMA: Coal Policy Engagement must include water and land-use
AUMA recently sent a letter to the provincial government, urging it to include local government representatives in the upcoming Coal Policy consultation. In addition to the meaningful dialogue with local governments, we also ask that the Coal Policy Committee’s Terms of Reference be holistic and include water and land use. It is our position that a provincial coal policy can be neither effective nor credible if it does not consider cumulative environmental impacts.
AUMA appreciates that the provincial government is listening to Albertans by first reinstating the 1976 Coal Policy and then recently suspending all Category 2 coal exploration. We look forward to hearing more about the final report from the Coal Policy Committee this fall.
