AUMA urges the Government of Quebec to repeal Bill 21

Last month, AUMA sent a letter to the Honourable François Legault, Premier of Québec, urging the Government of Quebec to repeal Bill 21, An Act Respecting the Laicity of the State. This was in response to the 2020 resolution passed by AUMA members that condemns any law that seeks to restrict or limit the religious and cultural freedoms of the residents of Canada. To create an inclusive community, public servants or any individual should have the right to freedom of religion and expression as guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

As a leader in advancing community inclusion, AUMA is proud of the progress made by Alberta’s municipalities to reduce issues of discrimination and encourage inter-faith discussion. In fact, some of Alberta’s municipalities have created spaces within public facilities for public servants and residents to pray or have quiet space for mental reflection.

We are hopeful that Bill 21 is repealed, and in the meantime, our Welcoming and Inclusive Communities initiative will continue to support Alberta’s municipalities through education and resources to create communities where everyone can feel a sense of belonging.
