AUMA’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Submission
AUMA provided our EPR feedback to Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) in mid-May, highlighting what municipalities want to see in EPR programs. Members shared that they want to be part of the decision-making. Alberta should harmonize our EPR regulations where possible, and the province must fund the EPR transition for hazardous and special products.
AUMA also sent a letter to the Minister of Infrastructure asking him to reinstate the funding for the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program until an EPR program is in place. Alberta Infrastructure’s cut back on the HHW Program directly downloads additional costs on municipalities. The HHW Program has been around for more than a decade, and the cutbacks are sending contradicting policy directions. On the one hand, AEP is expanding recycling programs. On the other hand, Alberta Infrastructure is cutting back on recycling.
