Chestermere and Fort Saskatchewan take formal steps to become more inclusive
AUMA extends its congratulations to the City of Chestermere and the City of Fort Saskatchewan as the newest members of the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities (CIM). CIM is a national network of the Canadian Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (CCUNESCO) that encourages municipalities to:
- Improve their practices to promote social inclusion;
- Establish policies to eradicate all forms of racism and discrimination; and
- Promote human rights and diversity.
Since its inception, AUMA’s Welcoming and Inclusive Communities initiative has encouraged members to join CIM to demonstrate the importance of inclusivity at the local level. There is no cost to join other than a municipality’s efforts to meet CIM’s Ten Common Commitments to support inclusion. To-date, nineteen of Alberta’s municipal governments have joined CIM, which is the second largest share of members out of all Canadian provinces and territories.

(Note that CIM changed its name in 2019. It was formerly known as the Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination.)
