Fibre network project underway in Strathcona County
Strathcona County has partnered with Alberta Broadband Networks, an Edmonton-based fibre-optic broadband infrastructure provider, to construct a fibre broadband network.
Alberta Broadband Networks is investing over $75 million to develop a fibre broadband network, at no cost to the local or provincial taxpayers, that aims to serve over 30,000 residents and businesses. Moreover, construction is already underway in the western parts of the municipality and is progressing eastward.
The project is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2025, with the first wave of residents expected to receive fibre service later this year.
This project is funded by Meridiam, a global investor and asset manager based in Paris, France, as part of a bigger fibre-to-the-premise (“FTTP”) network initiative. Through the initiative, over $150 million will be invested to extend fibre broadband service to more than 40,000 residential and business premises in central Alberta communities, including Beaumont, Strathcona County, Vermillion and Nisku.
