Media advisory: Key activities for media at AUMA Convention this week

Federal candidates, provincial ministers, and elected officials and senior administrators from municipalities across Alberta will be in Edmonton this week for the annual Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) Convention.

Starting Wednesday, September 25, over 1,100 municipal leaders and officials will gather at the Edmonton Convention Centre for a three-day convention that includes:

  • intergovernmental Q&As
  • member voting on advocacy priorities
  • sessions on high-profile topics like sustainable infrastructure funding, the future of municipal taxation, and the upcoming federal election.

Spokesperson availability: AUMA President Barry Morishita is happy to accommodate interviews throughout the convention as his schedule allows. During the event, please submit your requests to Carla Putnam Kerr, AUMA Communications Manager, at 780-668-2436.

Media sign-in: News media can attend a variety of activities at the upcoming convention once they have signed in at the registration desk, located in the Assembly Foyer in the Edmonton Convention Centre, and received a media badge. Your badge must be returned at the end of each day.

Media access: Due to space constraints and the popularity of the convention, room for cameras may be limited, especially in some smaller rooms. Media are welcome to attend all sessions, but AUMA asks that space for our delegates be respected to ensure everyone gets the best possible experience from our event.

*UPDATED* Media room: Salon 5 at the Edmonton Convention Centre is designated as the dedicated media room for any media scrums or announcements by the AUMA, the provincial government, or any other participating organizations. The room will be available during Convention registration hours, as listed on the event agenda:

  • September 25, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • September 26, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • September 27, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Other announcements: During the convention, media announcements involving dignitaries from organizations other than AUMA (Government of Alberta, Government of Canada, etc.), will be distributed to the media by the respective organization, rather than AUMA.

Event highlights: Key events the media may be interested in attending include the ones outlined here. Note that these dates and times are subject to change. For the latest version of the event agenda, visit the AUMA website.
