Medicine Hat launches Energy Innovation Challenge

The City of Medicine Hat has partnered with Decentralized Energy Canada (DEC) to launch the Energy Innovation Challenge Program, backed by $2.4 million in funding from both public and private capital.

The program's goal is to connect the city with solutions to address electricity grid congestion issues, and to leverage the investment to attract further development.

The program will be delivered in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Innovation Challenge – Participants submit proposals to address energy related issues identified by DEC and the City.
  • Phase 2: Community Demonstration – Successful proposals receive funding to conduct pilots, including emissions quantification and lessons learned reporting.
  • Phase 3: Investment – Successful participants are introduced to potential investors to secure additional capital for further development of their solutions.

This three-phase approach is designed to enable both small and mid-sized organizations to overcome commercialization challenges and bring their decentralized energy solutions to market. At the same time, the City of Medicine Hat will gain first-hand experience working with cutting-edge technologies through pilot projects.

The Energy Innovation Challenge demonstrates how municipalities can harness the expertise of innovators and entrepreneurs to tackle local challenges. By fostering collaboration and supporting innovative projects, the City of Medicine Hat aims to create a sustainable and resilient energy future, setting an example for other communities to follow.
