Municipalities guaranteed standing at Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) hearings

Alberta municipalities now have a guaranteed standing at AER hearings when development takes place in or near their boundaries and a statement of concern has been filed. This change was enabled through the Government of Alberta’s Responsible Energy Development Act General Regulation.

AUMA has advocated for guaranteeing municipalities during the process since 2014 when members passed a resolution calling for municipal standing to be guaranteed. It allows municipalities to have the standing and to exercise it at their discretion.

The new regulation took effect on January 1, 2019.
