Proximity Guidelines for Rail Safety Week

Did you know that Canada is the only country in the world that has proximity guidelines to guide new development near railways?

Elected officials, railway companies and the federal government collaborated to create the Guidelines for New Development in Proximity to Railway Operations to mitigate noise and safety issues near railways.

Almost every community in Canada has a rail line passing through it or nearby, making these guidelines applicable and relevant across the country. The guidelines lay out minimum setbacks for new residential and commercial developments. By incorporating them, a community can lower noise pollution and increase public safety for community members, especially in urban areas.

About 120 municipalities across Canada have adopted the guidelines in full or in part, and the AUMA supported their development along with other municipal associations. For more information on how your community can benefit from adopting the guidelines, visit https://www.proximityissues.ca/
