Support for Alberta Not-for-Profits through the Freedom to Care Act

The Freedom to Care Act was implemented by the Government of Alberta on September 1, 2021. It recognizes the social and economic role of volunteers and not-for-profits. The act also aims to remove barriers faced by not-for-profits, by allowing for “one-time-exemptions" from government regulations, if an exemption does not already exist. This new legislation also provides liability protection to a not-for-profit's volunteers if they are acting in good faith within the scope of their duties.

The Government of Alberta is supporting the act with a centralized website that lists all of the regulatory exemptions. This will help those applying for exemptions and also raise awareness of the existing exemptions. A link to this resource has been added to the AUMA Not-for-profit webpage.
