Update from the Legislature - Apr 14
The legislature is in session and the government has indicated a desire to pass Bills 56 and 64 by the end of the week. Bill 56 is of particular interest to municipalities as it will formally implement the Budget 2021 commitment to amend the Local Government Fiscal Framework (LGFF) Act by deferring the commencement of the LGFF until fiscal year 2024-25 and reducing the LGFF’s starting baseline funding amount when the program launches.
In response to rising Covid-19 cases and a spike in the P1 (Brazil) variant, Alberta moved back to Stage 1 of its economic relaunch strategy, which included reintroducing restrictions on gyms, retail capacity, and indoor dining. In a strong show of dissent, 18 UCP MLAs have signalled their opposition to this move, including 16 who signed an open letter decrying the stricter measures as the wrong decision.
