Update from the Legislature – December 4, 2024
The first session of the 31st Legislature reconvened on October 28 and is set to adjourn this week. The 2025 session calendar will be released on or before January 15.
2025 Provincial Budget consultations
The provincial government has begun pre-budget consultations and is inviting interested parties, including municipalities, to make online submissions. A telephone town hall meeting with Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board Nate Horner will be held on December 4. Alberta Municipalities made our pre-budget submission earlier this year with a focus on member priorities such as increased infrastructure funding and reducing interest rates on provincial loans to local authorities.
Changes to Automated Traffic Enforcement
Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen announced further restrictions to municipalities’ use of Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) at a Dec. 2 news conference. The changes come into effect on April 1, 2025. Alberta Municipalities expressed support for enabling local governments to use ATE for safety reasons, since the data shows it reduces deaths, injuries and property damage.
