Update from the Legislature - July 8

20-Year Strategic Capital Plan

As mentioned in the June 26 Digest, the Government of Alberta launched a review of the Alberta Infrastructure Act and a survey on the 20-Year Strategic Capital Plan. The survey takes 15-20 minutes to complete and covers a range of topics, including governance and prioritization. The Act is proposed to legislate a 20-Year Strategic Capital Plan, which is intended to provide a high-level framework for future priority infrastructure projects over the next two decades.

The Alberta Infrastructure Act would not legislate the roles and responsibilities of external organizations (e.g., municipalities, agencies, boards, commissions, post-secondary institutions, non-profits) or impact how they make their own decisions related to capital planning. It is proposed to legislate specific prioritization criteria used by the Government of Alberta to evaluate projects for the Capital Plan. These criteria would guide government decision-making on individual project funding requests, including new builds and capital maintenance and renewal projects. The 20-Year Strategic Capital Plan will not be a definitive list of infrastructure projects or provide specific funding levels - it is intended as a high-level, strategic document that will provide guidance and vision for Alberta.

The deadline to complete the survey is August 10.
