Update from the Legislature - June 10
Today Alberta enters Stage Two of the government’s three-stage “Open for Summer Plan”, for lifting COVID-19 restrictions based on vaccination thresholds and hospitalizations. Based on the current pace of vaccinations, the province projects we will enter Stage Three by the end of this month.
The Legislature is in session this week and is expected to adjourn for the summer on Thursday, June 17 – four weeks later than originally anticipated. Despite appearing on the Order Paper since last fall, it does not appear that Bill 49, the Labour Mobility Act, will be introduced. Bill 56, the Local Measures Statutes Amendment Act, 2021, is being discussed at third reading today.
The legislative assembly began debate on government motion 83 on June 7. The motion contains the suggested wording for a referendum question on equalization. The government intends to hold the vote in conjunction with the October 18 municipal elections. The government has also indicated that a decision on additional referendum questions to be held on October 18 will be made by the end of June.
In response to the recent terrorist attack in London, Ontario, the assembly debated and passed government motion 84 on June 8. Among other things, the motion called upon the Government of Alberta to strengthen law enforcement, educational and other efforts to combat Islamophobia, and all forms of bigotry and hatred; and encourage the Alberta Anti-Racism Advisory Council to study and report on hate crimes targeting religious and ethnic minority communities.
