Update from the Legislature - May 27

The legislature resumed sitting on May 25, after a three-week suspension. Originally scheduled to recess for the summer on May 20, the legislature is now expected to sit until at least June 10 to allow the government to advance the outstanding legislation on their spring agenda.

Last week, the recently appointed Coal Policy Committee provided their first public update. The committee is presently engaging with Albertans virtually, but it has indicated a desire to design additional opportunities to connect with Albertans after it has reviewed the feedback from the initial Government of Alberta survey. AUMA has expressed our desire to be engaged so we can provide a municipal perspective to the consultations.

The Jobs Now program was launched on May 19. Considered the largest job training program in Alberta history, this $370 million joint federal-provincial initiative will provide funding to assist with the cost of hiring and training individuals for both new and existing positions. There are three application periods, with the first running from May 20 to September 30, 2021.
