Update from the Legislature - Nov 12

The Legislature is on a constituency break this week and will resume sitting on Monday, November 16. Several bills were introduced last week, including two that may be of particular interest to municipalities.

Bill 43 will enable the province to charge tolls on new or expanded transportation infrastructure, provided there is a toll-free alternative. Existing infrastructure will remain exempt from tolling.

Bill 45 proposes two amendments to the Local Authorities Elections Act:

  1. Implementing a $30,000 per donor, per PAC contribution limit to third party advertisers
  2. Amending Section 11.2 to void bylaws that move the election date from the third Monday of October to the preceding Saturday in instances where the general election day is scheduled to be held in conjunction with a Senate election or referendum

A reminder that there will be a town hall meeting for Mayors and CAOs next Wednesday with Premier Kenney, Ministers Allard and Toews, and Dr. Hinshaw. The Province will send details in advance of the meeting.
