Update from the Legislature - September 22

Premier Kenney shuffles his Cabinet

On October 21 the premier announced the following changes (include staff) to Executive Council:

  • Tyler Shandro (Calgary-Acadia) moves from Health to Labour and Immigration
  • Jason Copping (Calgary-Varsity) moves from Labour and Immigration to Health

The legislature remains adjourned until Monday, October 25.

New public health measures take effect

New public health measures came into effect on Monday, including restrictions on restaurants, indoor gatherings, weddings and funerals, retail, entertainment venues, and indoor sport and fitness beginning.

Restrictions Exemption Program

Businesses or event organizers who decide to limit attendance to those who are vaccinated or can provide proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test will be exempt from the new health measures and may operate as normal. Albertans can access their vaccination records at alberta.ca/CovidRecords

The province also announced a Youth Sports and Recreation Exemption. It allows people who are younger than 18 to participate in sport, recreation and performance activities without producing proof of vaccination.

Vaccination Progress

As of September 20, 81.4 per cent of eligible Albertans had one dose of vaccine and 72.8 per cent were fully immunized with two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Federal election

Premier Kenney congratulated Prime Minister Trudeau on the re-election of his government in Monday’s federal election. He expressed his desire to pursue provincial priorities, including getting through the fourth wave of COVID-19, expanding healthcare capacity through a significant increase in the Canada Health Transfer and securing a fair deal for Alberta, beginning with reform of the federal Equalization Program.
