Update on provincial infrastructure funding for municipalities’ shovel-ready projects
Many AUMA members were interested to hear more details after repeated calls from the Alberta government for information on shovel-ready projects. AUMA staff reached out to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and have received the following information:
- The province is considering further economic stimulus measures, including potential municipal capital projects.
- The information on shovel-ready projects requested from municipalities will help the provincial government gauge the magnitude of demand across the province and the capacity of municipalities to undertake additional projects, but no decisions have been made at this time.
- The provincial government will share more information on new stimulus measures, including any requirements or conditions, as soon as possible.
At this time, please continue to send your potential capital projects to the Minister of Municipal Affairs’ office at minister.municipalaffairs [at] gov.ab.ca (minister[dot]municipalaffairs[at]gov[dot]ab[dot]ca), with a cc: to ma.geptbranch [at] gov.ab.ca (ma[dot]geptbranch[at]gov[dot]ab[dot]ca).
AUMA is advocating that economic stimulus funding for capital projects be distributed to all communities using the formula mechanism of the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) so that jobs are created across all parts of Alberta. Further details are available in our recent letter to the Minister of Municipal Affairs.
