What happens to your old laptop after you drop it off at a local eco-centre?
And what happened to all the used paint at the recycling depot?
The Alberta Recycling Management Authority (Alberta Recycling) recently released its 2018 Progress Report highlighting progress in electronics, paint, and tire recycling programs over the past year.
While AUMA congratulates Alberta Recycling for another successful year, AUMA continues working with major stakeholders to advocate for changes to modernize our recycling system. AUMA recently sent a letter to the Minister of Environment and Parks asking her to work with municipalities and Alberta Recycling to ensure our recycling programs are sustainable into the future.
We are asking the Minister to support modernization because:
- Recycling creates jobs.
- Alberta needs financially-sustainable recycling programs. The recycling fees today do not cover the actual cost of collection and processing.
- We need recycling programs to match today’s waste streams. Alberta has not expanded the programs over a decade.
- We need an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy to manage paper and packaging waste. The majority of Canadian provinces already have EPR paper and packaging programs.
