Several municipalities hire their own community peace officers and/or contract for RCMP enhanced policing. In these cases, municipalities are responsible for the full costs of additional policing.

Under the 2012 Provincial Police Service Agreement, which is in effect until 2032, municipalities that have never been policed by the RCMP must cover 100% of the costs of policing upon first contracting with the RCMP.

Policing Grants

In 2022, the Municipal Policing Assistance Grant (MPAG) and the Police Officer Grant (POG) were combined into a single grant – the Policing Support Grant (PSG). Municipalities are eligible for the PSG if:

  • Their populations are greater than 5,000.
  • They provide their own police service (through either a municipal police service or a Municipal Police Service Agreement with the RCMP)
  • They were eligible for the MPAG and the POG.

There is no application form for the PSG. Eligible municipalities receiving the PSG must submit an annual report for how the grant funds were spent.
