ABmunis' Infrastructure Committee Tours Hydrogen House

Thanks to a generous offer from Strathcona County, Alberta Municipalities’ Infrastructure Committee was given the opportunity to tour a newly constructed home that is heated entirely by hydrogen produced here in Alberta. The hydrogen house is a joint initiative of Strathcona County, ATCO, and Qualico Homes to demonstrate the commercial feasibility of hydrogen to provide emissions-free heating to neighbourhood scale developments.

Committee members were given a demonstration of the hydrogen furnace and reps from ATCO and Qualico were on hand to answer questions about the project. As this is a pilot project, the hydrogen is provided via an external tank to a hydrogen furnace/tankless water heater in the basement of the home. If this technology were to be integrated at a community scale, the hydrogen would be provided via a distribution network similar to natural gas.

Site visits are just one of the ways that participating in an Alberta Municipalities policy committee can provide opportunities for you and your community. Applications for the 2024/25 term are open now, and can be found on the ABmunis website
