Update from the Legislature – March 26, 2025
The Legislature is in session this week. Following two weeks of focus on department main estimates, the Legislature has moved on to debating government legislation.
Bill 44, the Agricultural Operation Practices Amendment Act, 2025, (AOPA) was introduced last week. The act and its associated regulations provide the legal authority for permitting and administrative oversight of confined livestock feeding facilities and manure storage. While the changes will have little impact on most urban members, it does make administrative amendments to the Municipal Government Act (MGA) to reference Intermunicipal Development Plans, (IDPs) along with Municipal Development Plans (MDPs), aligning AOPA with the MGA. The MGA was updated in 2018 to create IDPs and a hierarchy of planning instruments, where IDPs prevail over MDPs.
