ABmunis' input reflected in updated provincial manual
Alberta Environment and Protected Areas released an updated Municipal Policies and Procedures Manual in December 2024 that streamlines procedures to address drinking water and wastewater systems, particularly in areas not covered by existing regulations.
Key updates include guidance on protecting water bodies, calculating effluent limits for discharges to water and land, evaluating alternative wastewater treatment technologies, and enhancing storm water quality. These improvements aim to simplify the process for municipalities to adopt cutting-edge infrastructure and technology.
Alberta Municipalities’ 2022 Wastewater Innovation Task Force played a key role in advocating for these changes to help reduce the red tape municipalities encounter when upgrading their systems. We are pleased to see our task force’s efforts recognized in this updated manual.
The provincial government is currently updating Lagoon Regulations and plans to bring proposed changes to ABmunis’ Sustainability and Environment committee for review in February 2025.
