Advocacy win: 33 nurse practitioners & counting...
The Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Program introduced in April 2024 allows nurse practitioners to practice comprehensive patient care autonomously, either by operating their own practices or working independently within existing primary care settings.
Since the launch of this program, 33 nurse practitioners have begun providing care, primarily serving rural communities. Another 23 nurse practitioners have been approved to begin working independently through this program.
With the addition of these nurse practitioners, more than 31,000 Albertans in rural communities are now able to access timely care. This work supports ABmunis' resolution, “Integration of Nurse Practitioners into the Alberta Health Care System,” which has been an advocacy priority of the association since 2023.
