Alberta Municipalities' EPR Submission
Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) concluded the last round of engagement on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in late January. The ministry extended its submission deadline by a week so more municipalities could complete their submissions. For their part, local governments are excited to see the process continue moving forward.
Alberta Municipalities also provided its feedback to AEP. Here are the key points we made in our submission:
- Municipalities must be part of the decision-making process,
- Current service levels and accessibility must either be maintained or enhanced under EPR programs,
- Alberta’s EPR programs must accept the same items already included in other Canadian jurisdictions, and
- AEP should implement paper and packaging products, single-use plastics and hazardous and special products programs concurrently.
We have ongoing communications with AEP on how municipalities can support the development and implementation of EPR programs. We plan to share any EPR news with our members via The Weekly. Stay tuned.
