Amendments to controversial Bill 20 expected TODAY
Amendments to the provincial government’s highly controversial Bill 20 are likely to be presented and debated in the Legislature later today (Thursday, May 23, 2024).
Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver told reporters yesterday that he met with local leaders to discuss the proposed changes.
"The amendments are very much as a result of conversations with municipal leaders, so I'm hoping that they'll either be more unhappy or less unhappy," said McIver.
Minister McIver said he spoke with ABmunis President Tyler Gandam over the phone just minutes before talking to reporters at the Legislature.
President Gandam described their phone call, which lasted less than two minutes, as brief and disappointing.
“I told Minister McIver it was too bad we couldn’t sit down and discuss our concerns,” said Gandam.
Minister McIver confirmed the provincial government’s proposed amendments to Bill 20 would focus on two issues: the recall of councillors and the repeal of bylaws. The two briefly discussed these issues over the phone shortly after the bill was tabled on April 25.
