Committee highlights: Municipal Governance
Alberta Municipalities' standing committees play an integral role in advising the association's Board of Directors on its approach to key issues.
Our Municipal Governance Committee recently met and approved recommendations on a variety of issues, including:
- Legislative rules for the recall of municipal elected officials. The committee took a workshop approach to identify and recommend improvements to the current legislative rules. Its work was informed by input received from member communities that have managed recall petitions in 2023 and 2024. In this way, ABmunis will be prepared whenever the Government of Alberta’s reviews these recall rules.
- Minister of Municipal Affairs’ responses to five resolutions that were passed at our 2024 Convention. The committee reviewed the minister's responses and recommended the priority level and next steps for advocacy on each resolution.
- ABmunis’ new research on municipal finances. The committee provided input on the researchers' initial findings. Delegates at our Spring Municipal Leaders’ Caucus will receive a "sneak peek" of our preliminary findings.
