Municipal Climate Change Action Centre receives $54 million
During the March Municipal Leaders’ Caucus last week, Minister Shaye Anderson announced on behalf of the Minister of Environment and Parks $54 million in funding to the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) to fund energy programs for communities.
The MCCAC, which is a collaboration between the Government of Alberta, AAMDC (now the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, or RMA), and the AUMA, provides funding, technical assistance and education to support Alberta municipalities in addressing climate change by reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy efficiency. The MCCAC was facing an uncertain future as funding for all of its programs was slated to expire on December 31, 2018. The multi-year funding commitment cements a strong path for growth of the MCCAC and validates the important work it performs.
Funding has been broken down as follows:
- $16.5 million for Renewable Energy / Community Generation
- $17.5 million for Community Infrastructure Greening
- $5 million for Municipal Fleet Greening
- $15 million for Renewable Energy for Schools
