One-year extension granted for JUPAs

Last week, the Minister of Municipal Affairs announced a one-year extension for municipalities and school boards to have a joint use and planning agreement (JUPA) in place. The new deadline is June 10, 2026.

A JUPA must establish how the municipality and school board will work together on long-term planning and development and the use of school sites and school facilities, municipal facilities, and playing fields on municipal reserve and school reserve lands.

Most municipalities must complete a JUPA even if no school is physically located within their boundaries, so long as they have a student population served by the school board.

This is the second extension the minister has granted, which underlines the importance of starting the process early so your municipality can meet the new June 2026 deadline.
