Report Card on 2023 Resolutions
In September 2023, our members gave direction for ABmunis to advocate on 25 resolutions. We are pleased to publish a Report Card on the 2023 Resolutions that summarizes the responses from the provincial or federal government and the status of our advocacy on those resolutions. In particular, we want to highlight the following advocacy wins:
Expand Capacity to Train Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologists for Rural Alberta
Advanced Education has invested $2.6 million over three years to create 22 seats in the University of Alberta’s medical laboratory science program. Alberta successfully opened 15 additional Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist seats for fall 2024, with plans to further boost spaces in 2025-26.
Capital Funding Support for Housing Management Bodies
In April 2024, the Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services wrote to ABmunis stating that “Budget 2024 provides a substantial increase in funding for housing providers to operate affordable and seniors housing. In addition, Budget 2024 provides $120.9 million over three years for capital maintenance and renewal funding to help maintain existing units.” This funding will provide $75 million to 48 housing management bodies in 2024-25 and represents a 40 per cent increase ($21 million) over the 2023 budget.
Use of Golf Carts on Designated Municipal Roads
In December 2023, the Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors communicated to ABmunis that golf carts are currently not allowed on roads due to the lack of appropriate safety standards but that the Ministry is aiming to share results of a review in Fall 2024 on how the legislation could be amended to expand the use of golf carts and other non-traditional vehicles.
ABmunis will continue to advocate on behalf of our members to seek positive outcomes on all 2023 resolutions, as these are active for a three-year period. Details on all current and inactive resolutions can also be found in our Resolutions Library.
