Strathcona County rolls out NextGen911
Strathcona County became the first municipality in Canada to introduce the next generation 911 (NextGen911) network in late October 2023.
This technology will lead to safer, faster, and more informed emergency responses within the municipality, which covers an area of nearly 1,200 square kilometres.
The priority for municipalities across Canada is to switch over from the legacy analog 911 networks to the new state-of-the-art digital platform. Not only will this ensure Canadians have access to secure, reliable, and resilient emergency networks, but it will pave the way for future enhancements.
Over time, new technology capabilities of the NextGen911 will be rolled out and integrated into emergency call centres and first responder processes – including real-time text messaging (with data, photo, and video), among many other things.
