Update from the Legislature – April 9, 2025
The Legislature is in session. Two pieces of legislation that affect municipalities were introduced this week.
Bill 49, the Public Safety and Emergency Services Statutes Amendment Act, 2025, amends several pieces of legislation including the Police Act, the Emergency Management Act and the Scrap Metal Dealers & Recyclers Identification Act.
Bill 50, Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, 2025, contains amendments to the Local Authorities Election Act, the Municipal Government Act, and the New Home Buyer Protection Act. The most substantive proposed amendments would prevent municipalities from implementing codes of conduct, specifying which intermunicipal services must be included in an Intermunicipal Collaboration Frameworks (ICFs) and strengthen the dispute resolution process to ensure ICFs are adopted and implemented effectively.
Alberta Municipalities is reviewing both bills and will provide analysis at a later time.
