Update from the Legislature - Dec 8, 2021
The second session of the thirtieth legislature, which resumed sitting on October 25, concluded shortly before 3am on December 8, with all government-sponsored legislation being passed by the assembly. It marks the longest legislative session in Alberta history. The next session will commence in February, however the exact date has not yet been announced.
Provincial election date:
With the passage of Bill 81, the Election Statutes Amendment Act, 2021, the date of the next provincial election is set for Monday, May 29, 2023. This replaces the three-month election window, which had the election being held between March 1 and May 31, 2023.
2022 Provincial Budget Consultations:
The provincial government has begun pre-budget consultations and is inviting interested parties, including municipalities, to make online submissions by January 15. In addition to formal submissions, Albertans are invited to complete a survey. Telephone town hall meetings with Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board Travis Toews will occur in the new year.
Select Special Committee to Examine Safe Supply:
The legislative assembly has struck a Select Special Committee to Examine Safe Supply to be chaired by Calgary-Klein MLA Jeremy Nixon. The committee of MLAs will examine the pros and cons of offering safe versions of opioids and other addictive substances to people who are dependent on them. It will provide a report and any related recommendations by April 30, 2022.
Covid-19 Vaccination Progress:
As of December 6, 89.0% of Albertans aged 12+ had received one dose of vaccine, and 84.5% were fully vaccinated. 17.4% of Albertans aged 5-11 have received their first dose.
