"All systems go" for EPR!
Many of our members successfully transitioned to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), the provincial framework which sets new standards for recycling and household hazardous waste streams across Alberta, on April 1, 2025.
This policy represents a fundamental shift in waste management. It mandates that producers, not municipalities, must fund and account for the collection and processing of specific categories of waste.
Over the last few years, Alberta Municipalities has made a concerted effort to ensure our members were properly informed and prepared for this change. Our EPR web page continues to serve as a reliable source of information, offering the latest updates and comprehensive guidance to support municipalities as they transition to the new waste management framework.
We acknowledge that some municipalities are still in the process of negotiating contracts with Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs). Navigating these agreements can be challenging and, at times, confusing. We encourage members to use our online resources to help them make informed decisions.
If municipalities have more complex questions or concerns, they can contact the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA) by info [at] albertarecycling.ca (email).
