AUMA reviewing potential changes to LAEA

On June 20, 2018, the Province of Alberta announced consultation on potential changes to the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) and are seeking feedback by July 31, 2018, on various topics including campaign contributions and finances, campaign expenses, third-party advertising, school board trustee elections, voter identification, advance votes, and residency requirements.

AUMA is currently looking through the potential amendments to determine how they align with positions AUMA members have adopted previously through convention resolutions. Once the review is complete, AUMA will compile the information into an AUMA position document to assist municipalities in responding to the provincial survey. The LAEA position document will be sent directly to Mayors and CAOs when complete and will also be shared through the AUMA/AMSC Digest of Announcements in advance of the July 31 deadline.
