Clean Energy Improvement Program gains momentum
The Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) continues to expand.
Since the program’s introduction in November 2021, four communities have launched residential programs – the Town of Rocky Mountain House, Town of Devon, City of Leduc, and the City of Edmonton.
Fourteen bylaws enabling CEIP have been passed in Alberta thus far. Alberta Municipalities’ advocacy efforts in 2017 and 2018 helped make this innovative financing program possible.
The program enables municipalities to offer competitive financing to property owners for energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades. With CEIP, up to 100% of project costs are covered. Once upgrades are installed and approved, repayment is made through the property owner’s municipal property tax bill.
The City of Edmonton launched Alberta’s first Commercial CEIP on June 1, 2022. The program offers local businesses a flexible way to finance energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades. Repayment is made conveniently through a company's regular property tax bill and interest rates are competitive. Project financing is tied to the property, not the property owner. It allows business owners to save money now without worrying about what happens when they sell their property.
