Extended Producer Responsibility Webinar: April 24
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) represents significant change for all municipalities.
The Recycling Council of Alberta (RCA), in collaboration with Alberta Municipalities, is hosting a webinar in which representatives from municipalities in Ontario and B.C. that have already transitioned to EPR will talk about their communities’ experiences. Panelists will share advice to help navigate future changes with helpful information on how to prepare and what to expect, with a focus on smaller and more remote communities.
Date/time: Monday, April 24, from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
Moderator: Leah Seabrook, Strathcona County
Panelists:
- Laura Barrett, Simcoe County, ON (Ontario)
- David McKenna, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas
- Ben Van Nostrand, Columbia Shuswap Regional District, BC (B.C.)
- John Watson, Haliburton County, ON (Ontario)
- Laura Zapotichny, Regional District of Fraser Fort George, BC (B.C.)
What is EPR?
The industries that create paper, plastics, and hazardous materials will soon be responsible for the collection and management of those materials at the end of their product life. Producers must arrange to take over this responsibility from municipalities.
Essentially, recycling collection will soon be one less thing for municipalities to do. The costs for the recycling system will be accounted for in the cost of a product—not in property taxes or utility rates. You can find more information about EPR here.
