Province seeking input on Bill 201 – Firefighter leave amendment
Alberta’s Standing Committee on Alberta’s Economic Future is looking for input from Alberta municipalities regarding Bill 201, which proposes to include occasional leave for part-time firefighters to assist in fire response. The Bill also proposes to prohibit employers, without good cause, from preventing a person to act as a part-time firefighter if the employer has prior knowledge, or from refusing to employ a person because they are a part-time firefighter.
If passed, Bill 201 would amend the Employment Standards Code to include a new section regarding unpaid leave for part-time firefighters, which would come into force on January 1, 2019.
Volunteer and paid-on-call firefighters play an important role in municipal emergency response programs and we encourage our members to provide their input on the proposed changes to the Employment Standards Code.
Written submissions are accepted online or byEconomicFuture.Committee [at] assembly.ab.ca ( email) until Wednesday, June 6.
