Recording of climate risk webinar available now
Last week, members participated in an online discussion with Dr. Mary-Ellen Tyler about how municipalities can adapt to the challenge of extreme weather events.
We recorded the webinar, so you are in luck if you were unable to participate the FOMG webinar. Click here to watch the session.
Our discussion centred on Dr. Tyler’s recent research paper on developing municipal capacity to effectively assess and adapt to climate risk. Her research highlighted best practices for building capacity with our scarce municipal resources. Some of the interesting adaptation strategies included:
- Since climate risks are regionally specific, she suggests using Intermunicipal Collaborative Frameworks (ICFs) to share costs for climate risk assessments with your neighbours.
- Natural Asset Management is an economical and effective way to harness the natural landscape to reinforce or replace infrastructure.
- Emergency plans identify a community’s vulnerabilities. Incorporating these plans with long-term land-use planning can strengthen communities.
The other adaptation strategies presented in her research paper can be read here.
