Telling the story of GIPOT cuts
Members passed a resolution at the 2024 Alberta Municipalities Convention in late September that called for the reinstatement of full funding for the Grants in Place of Taxes (GIPOT) program.
During her address to Convention delegates, Premier Danielle Smith encouraged municipalities to share data with her about how the provincial government’s cuts to GIPOT have affected their communities since 2019. Soon afterwards, we emailed members to remind them of Premier Smith’s request and encourage them to take her up on her offer.
The following municipalities copied us on their correspondence with the Premier’s Office on GIPOT funding:
- City of Lacombe
- City of Lethbridge
- City of Lloydminster
- City of Medicine Hat
- Municipality of Crowsnest Pass
- Town of Canmore
- Town of Cochrane
- Town of Elk Point
- Town of Falher
- Town of Milk River
- Town of Morinville
- Town of Olds
- Town of Peace River
- Town of Westlock
- Town of Whitecourt
Thank you to all those members who have communicated with Premier Smith and other Government of Alberta officials on this important issue. We are hopeful that positive changes to GIPOT will be announced when the provincial government introduces its 2025 budget in late February. As usual, we will publish a full report on the provincial budget the day after its release.
