What do the China recycling restrictions mean for municipalities?

There has been a lot of discussion regarding China and their new restrictions regarding recyclable items and how this could impact municipalities and their recycling programs.

To help you understand the situation, the Recycling Council of Alberta has created China Market Restriction FAQs.  These FAQs cover topics from the new contamination rates, market impacts of recyclables, and more.

One question in particular addresses how an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program in Alberta would lessen the impacts of the China restrictions.  AUMA has been actively advocating for the province make changes to our Alberta’s recycling regulations that will better enable solutions to the challenges our recycling programs face.
